So, I have an opportunity through work to take some union training. Union politics generally disgust me, and if I had the option, I'd be working for my employer without the parasitic middleman I'm stuck with. That said, I think these courses could be valuable from a 'know thine enemy' perspective - I'm not so naieve as to think I could change the culture from within, though. Still, the thought of being a union flack, even in name only, makes me feel dirty. Thoughts?

I never turn down free training. Go for it.

I look forward to hearing about what you learn from "within". Think of it like an undercover project and you won't feel "dirty" anymore.

I'll tell you this, I worked as a Teaching Assistant as the University I studied at. I attended most of the Union meeting, usually voicing the silent majority opinion. We had a strike vote, I got my colleagues out to vote. Results:

49.4% in favour of striking
50.6% NOT in favour of striking

The point being sometimes the Union politics can be a little ugly, and the crowd not so bright, but you can influence your workplace. If I didn't get my colleagues out to vote, we would have hit the picket lines in Februrary.
