I believe Canada would be best served by willing volunteers, properly equipped.

I have a few thoughts about mandatory service.

One I'm for it as it would force everyone to overcome their "fearful feelings" about firearms as they become familiar with the uses and care of such abominations of society.

Two if we actually had a situation that required a vast army to defend ourselves we would not be a country full of useless never do wells who think a fox hole has something to do with a great looking girl.

Three we would actually have folks that would "think/know" what it takes and the services as a whole would command more respect from the average peacenik latte sipping joker who ridicules all that is freedom, that someone else bought for them with thier blood.

Four because it would pi** off the folks that pi** me off to no end. :P

Five I would have to discard the above in order to live by my Libertarian princibles....sigh.

I'm not at all in favour of conscription mainly because it would hurt the armed forces. If you have a finite amount of resources and all of a sudden you spread those resources over a larger group of people, you're going to lose something and that something is usually quality.

Second, various government and legal agencies would then use the military as a dumping ground for the unwanted from society.

Now are we talking Swiss conscription with a policy of armed neutrality or Israeli conscription where you'll likely have to fight whether you like it or not.

I generally favour a militia system, simply because it is in my opinion one of the best ways to maintain liberty in a country. That being said, I would oppose any attempts to force individuals to serve overseas.

In this age of smart bombs and drones I think the need for a draft is less than it used to be. I propose the service more of a way to teach our young people discipline and responsibility (not to mention a good work ethic). Those attributes are sorely missing these days.

I would go a step further and say loyalty, as well.

Conscription should only take place on a massive scale war, with the likes of World War One or World War Two. In times of relative peace, then no conscription.

Putting aside the suggestion (by me and others) that military service would build a nation of hard workers with integrity, I do agree that in this day and age when information and technology wins wars our government should ask us for our pay checks before asking us to give our lives. I'm sure my annual salary could do more damage to our enemies than me and a rifle.

I think it's a really good idea. Military service teaches you to be disciplined and punctual. You also learn about teamwork and make really good network. These are all good qualities you need to be successful in life.

1 year might be too much but one summer of military training/service for high school students should be good.
