Was thinking about this one and have though about the idea for a while . the provincially party is still called the " progresive conservative party of ontario " or ontario pc party by some . i still like the name ontario pc party but not that into calling it the progressive conservative party .
since the merger the federal party has been known as the " conservative party of canada "
The idea isn't exactly new i do remember flaherty being interested in going by conservative party of ontario during the last leadership race if i remember correctly .
not sure what any of the current potential leadership candidates have to say on this idea yet .
so poll question is should provincial party go by
- Conservative party of Ontario or
- Progressive conservative party of Ontario
and what might be some advantages and disadvantages of each name ? |

One advantage would be the opportunity to put some distance between the party and John Tory's ill-fated pledge to put the "progressive" back in the PCPO...
One disadvantage would be the necessity for new business cards for MLAs...

"Progressive" should never be used in conjunction with conservative values.
The political terminology "progressive" is connected to the socialist movement. So unless there are conservatives that like socialism (which there shouldn't be, otherwise they wouldn't be conservative) I don't see why how the heck it can be justified.
"progressivism" is everything we should be against.

Progressive Conservative is an oxymoron, the name was made for the sole reason of getting the Progressive Premier of Manitoba to run for the Conservatives. They should revert to just being the Conservative Party of Ontario.
I'm sure some people will say this is the death of the "Red Tory" faction in the PC's. The only problem is that Red Tories were never progressive, if you look at the actual ideology of Red Tories it would be socially conservative [pro-life, pro-family, supportive of traditional values and the Church] along with a strong tendency towards economic nationalism and a commitment to national sovereignty. I'm not even sure if a Red Tory movement even exists since it's been bastardized to mean "socially liberal, fiscally conservative." |

As others have said, it's roots from socialism are a plain fact of history. Libertas wrote: | I'm sure some people will say this is the death of the "Red Tory" faction in the PC's. From socially conservative and fiscally moderate, to fiscally conservative and socially moderate. Mind you, the philosophy on the proper role of government is roughly the same... |

not sure how the idea would go over with the public but considering the federal party has allready done the same it might be an easier sell .
but the word progressive seems to have gotten old , where is the term conservative seems to have found new life . like don't or rarely see the word progressive used to describe anyones political views anymore .
not sure what the various leadership candidates thoughs are on such an idea or what the 24 current mpp's think either . but i think its definity an idea to consider if nothing else . |

The term progressive has been hijacked by the left to make themselves look like the party that advocates progression of society, & openess to new ideals. Conservatism has been too often associated with status-quo. However any party that advocates big government, adds laws to silence free speech is not a progressive party, & consider the choices availiable today no party is truly progressive. One way or another there are elements in every party that want to retain the status-quo. |

Exactly... The most bizarre part about so-called "progressives" is their concept of what represents progress...

for sure it has been used by the left , look to the coalition or last election where the term " progressive " was used to describe the lefts desire for a more progressive prime minister . not sure what would of been progressive about stephane dion but anyways it has been used by them . more than it has by the conservatives in recent years . |

http://www.wimp.com/thegovernment/
I BELIEVE the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person's dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.
I BELIEVE in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability.
I BELIEVE free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.
I BELIEVE government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn.
I BELIEVE the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and that the best government is that which governs least, and leads the most.
I BELIEVE the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people.
I BELIEVE Canadians must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.
I BELIEVE Canadian value and should preserve our national strength and pride while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.
FINALLY, I believe the Republican Party of Ontario could be the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.
How say you? |

I personally like Conservative Party of Ontario. “Progressive” and Conservative” should never be used in the same name length. It screams identity crisis. I know Progressive had a different meaning in 1943 than it does today, but it does need to go! |
