Quote:
Interim Liberal leader Bill Graham has summoned all eight party leadership contenders to an emergency meeting Thursday morning to find a way out of the crisis over whether the party should recognize Quebec as a nation, sources say.

Mr. Graham was not expected to take a specific proposal into the room and the one-hour discussion was not expected to end with a solution endorsed by all leadership candidates. Still, it was intended to force them to put their cards on the table and start making compromises, one week before the party's leadership convention begins in Montreal.

Liberal delegates are set to vote on the "nation resolution" on next Wednesday at the convention.

Why can't the Liberals just leave what's well enough alone?

They won't leave it alone because:

1) the Liberals are attempting to appease Quebec nationalists in an attempt to end the separtist issue
2) without Quebec Canada may lose land to the Americans (hence Atlantic Canada)
3) no Quebec, no Atlqantic Canada, no redisturbution of wealth would be required, in other words even with Ontario the smaller nation of Canada would gradually shift right tipping the balance to the Conservatives making them the nationalistic party of choice.

What they are doing, as I see it, is pandering to separatists, thinking that this will appease Quebec, and get them the Ontario vote they need.

It might work, depends if people are thinking or not.
