I got a subscription a year ago. From what I can tell, if you are not reading the Western Standard, you are not properly infomred. What is your opinion (keeping in mind that there is only one true correct position )?

Ezra Levant, on the WS blog, once tried to accuse a phone company of being anti-semitic because they listed Palestine as a region. I sincerely believe that he is a deadpan comedian. Stephen Colbert is a hack compared to him.

You could be right, Donald... and I certainly enjoy Ezra more than Colbert... even if Ezra doesn't have a bridge named after him.

Really? I thought I was the only one. I started reading magazines back to front with Fotheringham in Macleans. How about you?

I have to say that I was underwhelmed by the WS, perhaps because I was expecting (hoping?) for more. Just as the Globe is blah because you know what it's going to say before you read it, I also found the same thing, for the most part, in the WS, but on the other side. There are exceptions, of course: J. Ibbitson, Rex Murphy and (I can't believe I'm writing this) M. Wente (did you see that piece of hers in May? on the Tory day care / rebate plan? hint: she was for it! (?????)). I like Steyn - if only because he is a) hysterically funny (and as true Greek comedy, reveals much truth) and b) challenges me, even if sometimes I think he's crack-pot crazy. But that is simply what a magazine or newspaper is supposed to do. Don't preach to the converted, the choir or make comfortable pews, as I fear WS does. Challenge, be rigourous.
I'd hate to say this, and I wish to say this because I want a conservative tradition to take deep and loooooong roots in Canada, but I find Maclean's (only very recently) more challenging (please don't stone me!, again, can't believe I just wrote that...) simply because I pick it up expecting either liberal fluff or decent liberal positions, but then, SLAP, a Steyn bomb in my (and many other Canadian's laps). Amen! Cheers to the editor who brought Steyn on board. Perhaps the editor sees which way the wind is blowing long-term? And if so, amen. But the WS? Hmmmm....

An aside about preaching to the choir: Back when I was an Alliance member the old Report magazine called me up for a subscription. I guess a leadership race sold their names or something? Anyways, their sales line was that the Liberals were holding up a bill that would make seniors pharmaceuticals more expensive. There was almost nothing, maybe nothing at all, mentioned about the magazine. The caller just seemed to want to convince me that the Liberals wanted to kill seniors. It was one of those moments where things click and you sort of say to yourself, "What am I doing here?"

I too have noticed an improvement in Macleans lately. For a while there is simply was not worth even picking it up. Maybe they are feeling some heat from the WS and others?
