Torstar Corp said on Thursday it will cut about 160 jobs in its newspaper division as the book and newspaper publisher copes with a declining newspaper market.

I guess the appetite for communism in Toronto isn't as great as the editorial board of the Toronto Star thought. This is good news indeed.

All newspapers are hurting and unfortunately the Red Star seems to be in the best shape of all the "nationals".

The National Post went through layoffs and shortened their paper a few years ago, G&M did it last year.

I wonder when it will occur to the newspaper people that we the public want less editorializing, less being dictated to by "our intellectual and moral superiors", and more of the straight facts, more of the the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? Not only that, but they are just plain insulting if your view does not happen to match theirs. Who wants to pay the paper boy to bring a daily dose of insult to the door?

I mean seriously, a lot of what passes for news these days are just shockingly bad opinion pieces. Written by people with poor understanding of our history, skewed and irrational world views, and seemingly not to bright. Who would pay for that?

I wouldn't mind seeing the Red Star crash but I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon... more's the pity.

Torstar profits fall 25 per cent

TORONTO - Torstar Corp. chief executive Rob Prichard says a sharp first-quarter decline at the newspaper and book publisher isn't indicative of the performance expected for the rest of the year, but analysts say advertising trends and an eco

They boast of having the biggest circulation in Canada but the only reason they do is because they give the paper away inorder to increase circulation so they can chage more for advertising. i don't know what there ad rates are but i would suspect the G&M and Post would charge more because their readership is probably more affluent. If you cater to welfare recipients and social workers that who you will get reading your paper.

I remember there was an article in the Star equating Christianity with Nazism. I called to cancel my workplace subscription and the girl asked me if I wanted 10 weeks free. I said yes and canceled after 10 weeks.
