Here's a great article by Lorne Gunter of the National Post. The following are the first few paragraphs but it's well worth following the link.
Capitalism and conservatism go together because both are predicated on belief in the individual.
Early on in his 1922 masterwork Socialism, the great Austrian free-market economist Ludwig von Mises offers a devastating explanation of why central planning cannot work ó there are too many inputs in every economic decision and most of them are unknown and unknowable.
Socialism can never work. Itís a rotten system, plain and simple. For even the simplest purchase at a retail store, there are too many factors up and down the supply chain for any planner to capture them all. From the farmer or miner who supplies the raw materials, to the manufacturer who processes them into goods, to the wholesaler, transporter, retailer and consumer there are simply too many variables for even a phalanx of government economists to predict accurately.
And thatís only the primary supply chain. What about the secondary suppliers, such as the farm machinery manufacturer and factory equipment makers and the freight truck suppliers and the contractors who build warehouses and retail stores, and all the workers up and down the line?
The web of economic stimuli, preferences and guesses is so vast ó even in a purchase as trivial as a pack of gum ó that no state actor can meddle in it without sending ripples of unintended consequences throughout the entire economy.
And the bigger the meddling, such as limiting foreign investment or subsidizing whole industries, the bigger the unintended ripples.
Government interference in the economy is doomed from the outset. Much better, then, to leave economic preferences to the price mechanism, to the market, to the law of supply and demand.
The more goverment intereferes with market forces, the more they take choice out of the hands of the individual. Freedom includes the freedom to fail, succeed, lose it all or gain the world. Everytime we lose one of these freedoms be it a positive or negative our democracy is lessoned. Health care and EI help people over the long hall but take 10-15% of peoples moneys. Is there any doubt the the 60% turnouts at election time are because people don't need to care as much what with the social safety net we have in place and don't have the funds to fashion their own future with. The Liberals and Dippers just don't see it and want more and more government programs.
More government programs = less choice = more taxation = less freedom.
