| They should drive down the street, find some hard working, low profile Joe's, and see if they have any ideas. Drafting existing elites is all well and good, and we need some of them in Parliament, but we also need some people who actually know what it is like to complete a hard days work. People who have never driven a BMW, and probably never will. |

"I think that a few years of Dalton Mcginty in office has really made Ontario's hatred for Mike Harris wash out a little, you can say what you want about him but if you thumb through both his platforms you usually knew what was coming. "
yeah, to some extent.. but its still rare that I hear anything good said about Harris - too many ontarian young people grew up with their teachers telling them he was the devil ;) He's a dangerous figure - He could be a great asset, but he could be a terrible mistake.. kind of the CPC version of Bob Rae hehehe.

Its funny you mention that, Bill160 was one of the major items that made me into Tory.
I think in the right riding he could be a seat that we could take from the Liberals, I mean keep in mind folks gave Tony Clement and Jim Flaherty a chance and they were both Harrisites.

True,
I don't particularly question his ability to get elected - its whether it would have a negative impact on others running around ontario..
Don't get me wrong, I like Harris... Ontario just couldn't handle a little bit of reality ;) Unfortunately, he's got a rough name. |

What is it about teachers that makes them think they way that they do? Is it simply the fact that they are forced to join a union? |

When I was in High School to prove a point to all of us as to how hard my Grade 12 Economic Prof worked he broke down on the board how many hours a day he spends mark/teaching/lunch duty etc, and Ironically enough it worked out to be about 37 hours a week, not factoring in two and a half months of summer, two weeks at christmas, a week of march break, and PA days.
When that point was brought to light he said if any of you ever teach you will understand how hard it was, and in my final year of grad school I TAed for a first year Finance Class, 81 students over three tutorials assignments due every week that I needed to mark and tests every three weeks that I also needed to mark as well as office hours every week.
Couple that with 30 hours of class that I had to go to myself, I sort of realized that the whole "As High School Teacher we work 60 hour weeks" thing is totally untrue, maybe some teacher but not the majority.
I think that "socialist indoctrination" comes from the fact that like anyone else in life, you don't want people to think your job is easy or you are overpaid and you certainly do not want to give up things that you have been given in the past the easiest way to do that is to drone on and on about how hard life is and hope it rubs off on your students.

Yeah, and it grows old fast for some of us... I for one roll my eyes when nurses and teachers (oh, and auto worker union execs) start complaining about their jobs..
when are they not complaining about their jobs? WHY are they still doing the jobs if they are so bad? |

I was a volunteer TA in a grade 3/4 class when the Harris teacher strikes were going on and off.
The teacher I helped had friggin' anti-Harris posters in her class room and she told her students to go home and ask their parents why Mike Harris wanted to shut down their school.... |

I caught the brunt of this type of activity... I moved to Ontario when I was still in highschool... I was Alberta born and raised, so having me in a class when someone started rattling off falsehoods about ralph klein and Harris was a bad thing.. On several occassions I got in arguments with my teachers about the topic. On one such occassion, I was asked to leave the room, and when I brought it up to the administration they brushed it aside. It still angers me to this day that teachers are so free to inject their political will in the students that they are supposed to be teaching. I successfully leave politics at home when I go to work(except when I log on here  ), so can they.
Then again, if they started suggesting that gay marriage was wrong, they'de lose their jobs..
go figure. |

I was in high-school when Harris was first elected in 1995.
I ticked of some teachers because I was handing out Mike Harris buttons from my locker!
I had a very pro-Conservative business teacher at my school and the day after Harris won he saw me and my friends in the hall and shouted, "Its a good day to be a white male!"
Needless to say, the other teachers didn't like him much. |

They would if they were white males ;) lol
Speaking of which, thats another issue as well... There's always this suggestion that conservatives are mostly white male, and it's always stated in negative context...
Although this is true to a great extent(as it is with the liberals as well), why the negative context? I'm sure it wouldn't go over so well if i screamed out "the NDP is all a bunch of immigrants"...

| I don't know if you were aware of this, but the reason for the teacher's comments was that Harris promised to scrap employment equity, which was one of the first things he did. |
