I see the new P.M. just signed Kyoto. Australia's green house gas emissions are way above their 1990 levels. Will they have to buy billions in carbon credits to meet their targets by 2112?
I have read many news articles raving about how great this event is but no one says what it will cost Australia to meet their Kyoto Goals! :x
Hope they go into recession! |

They'll probably do the same thing the other countries that signed Kyoto did. Big photo op... then, not much.
Then there'll be a Big Bali-hoo with the new meetings with photo ops... then, not much.
Poetry anyone?
The Great Bali Meeting,
Sat on the "Great Wall".
The Great Bali Meeting,
Had a great fall.
All of Gore's horses,
And all the UN men,
Couldn't put Bali together again.
(Man, that was pathetic). |

| Who cares? Unless of course, they are sending some of their billions my way. Then I welcome their environmental leadership and respect for the land. |

If Harper was cynical he would have said "we support Kyoto" and brought in non binding policies that would have caused business to do nothing , just like they did under the Liberals.
His honesty may cost us our majority. If there is one thing I can't stand it's an honest politician. |

Not much. They will only be 1% above their target - unlike us. |

| Quote: | The previous government said Australia would meet its Kyoto targets, despite not ratifying the pact, but Rudd said the latest advice suggested it would miss its target to curb greenhouse emissions growth to 108 per cent of 1990 levels by 2012.
“We are currently likely to exceed, or overshoot, our target by one per cent,” Mr. Rudd said, adding that Australia faced penalties under new targets beyond 2012. |
Your right.
Who gets to choose the goals. 108% of 1990 levels. We were saddled with 6% below 1990 levels. If anything comes of this new agreement they are working on I hope it's realistic targets. |

| freakin random baselines. The whole thing is so flawed. I dunno how you could make an agreement that countries would work on without seriouse flaws. Unless you had one world government. |

Have you read Kyoto? The emissions have to fall enough so that the average of the years leading up to 2012 is at or below your target. You cannot just meet your target once in the last year and get away clean. If they are 16% above this year, they will have to be 16% below next year to get the average to work. A 32% reduction does not sound very easy to me. |

We went 6% below 1990 because that was more than the Americans were willing to commit too. It was all about embarrassing those Yanks. |

Their target for 2012 is 8% ABOVE 1990 not below like us.
P.S. The secret to reducing green house gases is mass human composting. |

Doesn't composting cause methane? |

Not when you burn it. It gets used as energy and emits CO2. However, the mass human composting project would only be a one time thing and wouldn't go on for years - just until the population is reduced to 50% of what it is now.
Perhaps stepping into disintegration chambers like on Star Trek would be cleaner. |

I guess it The new P.M. is backing away from the Enviro-nazi platform.
| Quote: | PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd last night did an about-face on deep cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, days after Australia's delegation backed the plan at the climate talks in Bali.
A government representative at the talks this week said Australia backed a 25-40 per cent cut on 1990 emission levels by 2020.
But after warnings it would lead to huge rises in electricity prices, Mr Rudd said the Government would not support the target. |
