As some of you may not be aware, today at 9:00 am, firefighters from across Canada marched in Ottawa to pay tribute to the hundreds of Canadian firefighters who have perished in the line of duty. Today is Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day.
Many of you may struggle to remember the last time a firefighter perished in the line of duty - it doesn't seem to happen that often - but it is an ongoing sacrifice that we would do well to remember. To put it in context, since the first our troops arrived in Afghanistan in 2002, 46 of our Canadian firefighters have died in the line of duty. 11 were volunteers.
As we take time in the coming days to remember the victims of 9/11, and as we continue to mourn the loss of our soldiers in Afghanistan, please hold a moment to think on the sacrifices of our fallen heroes at home.

I've been really lucky over the years as I've worked with excellent, dedicated firefighters... and most of them can take a joke and give back as good as they got. In fact, in Victoria, the firehall was next door to the Detachment so we often had coffee with the boys.
The Mounties run the 'burbs. I was in Langford for 5 years and Sidney for 2 before moving to the lower mainland. Greater Victoria has seven different police forces... powerful argument for amalgamation, IMHO.
