Civilians only suffer the most when their country is targeted.
Lets look @ Japan, their citizens only suffered when the US started bombing.
Civilians do suffer in war but it varies greatly.

I bet the Sunni's are not happy but hey, democracy is best, minorities should not run countries as its "undemocratic".

The US has also gone to extraordinary efforts to keep civilian casualties to a minimum. If they used the carpet bombing techniques of WW2 you can be sure the casualty rate would be a hell of a lot higher than it is now.

On your ? of how the left would respond they would probably try and attack the validity of the poll.
What is the sample, what is the question wording, when was the poll conducted, what company conducted it, what other polls are there on this issue.
