Why is it everyone is claiming Canadas emmisions are going up? They are going up, but if we look more closely Alberta in 2004 emitted 40% of our C02 emmisions while only having 10% of our population. In 1995 they emmited more like 25% of our emmisions. That mean in less than 10 years Alberta's emmisions skyrocketed. Yes, we all love gas but Alberta can't just pollute all it want during this modern day gold-rush. We need to set standards for the emmisons they create refineing oil fast, and who knows maybe that could get us close to our Kyoto target(not that I think we can achieve it)
Clearly you didn't read the methodology. Making a statement like this...
"but if we look more closely Alberta in 2004 emitted 40% of our C02 emmisions while only having 10% of our population"
Is very misleading. If you look more closely at the methodology presented on their website you would see the following very important statements...
"do not include mobile sources such as cars, trucks and construction equipment;"
"generally do not include releases that fall below the reporting threshold of 10 tonnes manufactured, processed or otherwise used;"
"generally do not include small facilities with less than 10 employees;"
Oil and gas operations are massive. If you were to include smaller polluters and cars then Alberta's numbers would be pretty close to the national average. The reality is that Alberta has some very large industries and therefore ranks high in a study like this that excludes cars and smaller operations.
.. Yes, we all love gas but Alberta can't just pollute all it want during this modern day gold-rush...
CO2 does not equal 'pollution'.
We need to set standards for the emmisons they create refineing oil fast, and who knows maybe that could get us close to our Kyoto target
1. Our emissions aren't coming from refining crude - a lot of that takes place in the US or Ontario. We just pull it out of the sands.
2. I know, and no, nothing short of shutting down the oil sands, the entire power grid of Ontario, the manufacturing sector, and all personal transportation would allow us to come anywhere near 'close'. Only a total shutdown of our entire economy would help us hit the target, and that's no exaggeration. Check out the other threads on the board.
3. Are you currently, or have you ever been, a Trudeau ?
