Quebec member of Parliament Denis Lemieux resigns seat

'The one and only reason that motivates this well-considered decision is family,' says Chicoutimi-Le Fjord MP

CBC News Posted: Nov 06, 2017 10:57 AM ET| Last Updated: Nov 06, 2017 10:57 AM ET

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Denis Lemieux, left, leave on a boat tour on the Saguenay River during a two-day caucus meeting in 2016 in Saguenay, Que. Lemieux announced Monday he's resigning his Chicoutimi-Le Fjord seat for family reasons.

Quebec backbencher Denis Lemieux is quitting federal politics.

The Chicoutimi-Le Fjord MP released a statement on Monday morning saying he's leaving for family reasons.

"The one and only reason that motivates this well-considered decision is family," wrote Lemieux in a statement in French.

"I am aware that I am leaving an extraordinary parliamentary team … I intend to continue, behind the public scene, to serve my country and to help my fellow citizens as best I can."

Lemieux was first elected in 2015, beating former NDP MP Dany Morin.

While Martine Ouellet has made it clear she won't seek a seat in by-election;
This is about as safe of a bet as you are going to find.

This is a riding where the NDP should reach out and make an effort to try and not simply let all their support in Quebec fall away as they held this riding from 2011- 2015.

The BQ has historically been strong here and should be a strong effort

And the Liberals are the incumbents

Should be interesting

the timing seems odd to me , for an mp to resign the day after 4 by elections are called , it seems trudeau might of called the 4 by elections early so this one wouldn't of been included . there not in a rush to have one in a riding they barely won in 2015

as for the main 4 parties

the conservatives really have nothing to lose here , the merged party hasn't held the seat ( but old pc party did win it in 80's and 97 when charest leader ) . although they did do well in 2008 when they came 2nd and got 34% of the vote but haven't done as well in the other elections

the liberals will likely try and buy the riding like Lac Saint Jean , expect funding announcements and visits by trudeau in an effort to boost liberal numbers .

the bloc , if the bloc can't do well here or Lac saint Jean . you have to wonder where could they do well ? these are 2 ridings the bloc historically did well in and mostly only French speaking voters

the ndp ? I only see them being a major factor or doing well if the former mp Dany Morin runs again , he seems to have a following in the riding

( the cpc candidate appears to have a background in Hockey not politics )

Richard Martel with the Conservative Party?

Jonathan Hudon

The Daily

From the hockey chamber to the political arena? It would seem that Richard Martel is making the leap into federal politics, which he would be perceived as the Conservative Party of Canada candidate for the by-election in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. An announcement could even take place this week.

The TVA reporter covering federal politics in Ottawa announced the news on her Twitter account mid-afternoon on Monday. Despite several attempts, Richard Martel still had not made calls from The Daily at the end of the day. A source, however, confirmed to the newspaper that the hockey man, known for his outspokenness and intensity, was seen in Ottawa last week. He was present during Question Period in the House of Commons and was seen greeting the Conservative MP in the riding of Louis-Saint-Laurent, Gérard Deltell.

People involved in the Conservative Party did not comment on the

Martel has been involved in the hockey world for over 25 years. He started his coaching career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens as assistant coach from 1990 to 1992, before being head coach with the Saint-Germain Laser. Hyacinthe, the Foreurs of Val-d'Or, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar and the Saguenéens. He was relieved of his duties in 2011 by the Chicoutimienne formation, having spent more than eight seasons in 2003 and 2011, including six complete. He succeeded René Matte in November 2003.

He holds the record for most regular-season wins in the QMJHL at 589. He won the title of coach of the year twice in the major junior, in 1994 (Saint-Hyacinthe) and in 2005 (Chicoutimi).

After a three-year stint in Europe, Richard Martel made a return to the region by taking the helm of the Marquesas de Jonquière in the North American Hockey League in the midfield of the playoffs of the 2015-2016 season. He drove the Jonquiérois to the playoff championship last spring.

The by-election in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord is necessitated by the resignation of Liberal MP Denis Lemieux on November 6. The government has still not announced the partial date.

Martine Ouellet does not comment

Passing Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean since Sunday (see text page 10), the leader of the Bloc Québécois Martine Ouellet has preferred to keep a little discomfort, when invited to comment on the news.

"For now, it's at the stage of rumors and it has not been confirmed, so we'll wait until it is," said Ms. Ouellet, adding that she did not know Richard personally. Martel.

Chicoutimi-The Fjord

Ex-coach Richard Martel would go into politics

VAT News

| Posted on 18 December 2017 at 14:20 - Updated on 18 December 2017 at 14:23

Former hockey coach Richard Martel would run as a Conservative candidate for future by-elections in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, TVA News reported.

After thirty years spent behind the bench of various hockey teams, the one who is known for his outspokenness, his flamboyant side and his explosive temperament would make the leap into politics.

Martel coached the Chicoutimi Saguenéens twice, for almost eleven years before being definitively sacked in February 2011.

He then worked for teams in Sweden and France before returning to the Saguenay to train the Marquis de Jonquière. Last summer, he was appointed Commissioner of the North American Hockey League (LNAH).

Martel is the coach who has signed, to date, the most victories in the ranks of the major junior in Quebec (589 wins). He has twice won the QMJHL Coach of the Year award.

In his region, he is considered an important public figure. According to our information, it is at a turning point.

He met with influential members of the Conservative Party last Wednesday in Ottawa, and he seems to like the Conservatives' economic rhetoric.

On November 6, Liberal MP Denis Lemieux announced that he was leaving his position for family reasons.

The federal government has not yet announced the date of by-elections.

the conservative move is interesting

its clear the liberals called some of the other by elections early once they had the candidate they wanted ( such as South surrey white rock ) and this didn't allow the opposition much time to prepare a proper campaign

so by nominating early there giving this new candidate some time to prepare and perhaps get better known in the riding , as by election unlikely to be called until maybe January or Feb ? maybe

it doesn't mean they'll win but does appear there running a serious campaign in the riding
