TransCanada says it has received a presidential permit from the U.S. State Department that allows it to build the long-delayed Keystone XL pipeline.
Former president Barack Obama rejected the previous Keystone proposal saying it wasn’t in the U.S. national interest.
The new administration has said repeatedly that President Donald Trump supports the project.
However, Keystone may face more hurdles.
TransCanada (TSX:TRP) still does not have deals with all the landowners in Nebraska on the proposed route.
The company also lacks a permit in that state and protesters promise they will try to stop the project, which will stretch from Alberta to refineries Texas.

Trump administration approves Keystone XL pipeline

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration has issued a presidential permit to pipeline builder TransCanada to build the Keystone XL pipeline.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer tweeted that President Donald Trump would discuss the pipeline later Friday morning.
The State Department says that it determined that building Keystone serves the U.S. national interest. That's the opposite conclusion to the one the State Department reached during the Obama administration.
The State Department says it considered foreign policy and energy security in making the determination.
The permit was signed by Tom Shannon, a career diplomat serving as undersecretary of state for political affairs. That's because Secretary of State Rex Tillerson recused himself due to his previous work running Exxon Mobil.
Keystone will carry tar sands oil from Canada to refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Killing Keystone by proxy: Liberals hire anti-pipeline activists to do their dirty work

Canada’s Natural Resource Minister, Jim Carr, doesn’t seem to want to see the Keystone XL pipeline built judging by comments he made in a CBC interview so it appears our government is just another road block in getting the pipeline up and running, but there’s more.
Not only won’t the Liberals lobby for Keystone but both they and the Alberta NDP have stacked their review panels with anti-Keystone XL activists.
Environmental Defence has publicly stated they’re against Keystone XL yet their Executive Director Tim Gray was hired on a panel by the Alberta NDP government to make decisions regarding the oil industry.
Friends of the Greenbelt gave Environmental Defence $150K back in September of 2015 and lawyer Rod Northey is a former chair of that foundation.
Why is he important? Well, the Liberals took a page out of the NDP’s playbook and hired their activist pal to sit on a panel that will, they claim, improve the National Energy Board’s environmental review process, and the NEB is a body that helps in decision making on energy projects in Canada.
Other countries filling our market space will be light years ahead of us before pipelines like TransMountain are even built. We have one client in the U.S. that’s become our competitor.
Without the immediate go ahead on these projects, the nail is in the coffin and the Canadian oil and gas industry is dead.

Trudeau Liberals give Trump middle finger on Keystone XL
Holly Nicholas

A lot of Canadians rejoiced when Donald Trump approved Keystone XL, but that celebration should wait until we actually get the pipeline in place.
Unfortunately, this project still faces a huge road block from Canada’s federal government.
One reality being glossed over is the fact that Nebraska still has to approve the pipeline route at hearings requested by TransCanada scheduled for August 7th to 11th.
It’s clear to me the Liberal government has absolutely no interest in this project.
Consider what our Minister of Natural Resources, Jim Carr said in a CBC interview recently:
“Canadians aren't going to go down there and tell state legislators what to do. They have their own process. We'll respect that.”
And by “Canadians”, he of course mans the Liberal government.
Carr also said obstacles exist and that although we love Americans, we have to expand our market beyond the US because we export 98% of our product there. With this statement, Carr is banking on the fact that most Canadians don’t know the energy file.
While it’s true Canadian bitumen will be transported to US refineries with much of that product going to fuel American gas tanks, what Carr neglects to mention is the massive opportunity for Canada to enter the Asian market that’s almost certain to come once the pipeline is built.
Meanwhile, the US has increased their production and entered the market filling the space Canada could have taken years ago if only our government wasn’t busy fending off foreign funded professional protestors and progressive governments that are either in it for the money, or being played by governments working hard to make energy independence their reality.
I can’t see the federal government supporting this project - in fact, Carr makes it sound like he wants to fight against it.

I will take a wait and see approach on this one;
The Liberals have historically thumbed their nose at oil publicly and backed it relentlessly in reality.
Afterall, someone needs to pay for all their spending and Eastern and Western Oil help do just that.
Lets see where we are in August;
I expect the Federal Government to be inline with Keystone. |
