As someone has always felt that reduction of waste (essentially anything that comes some a smokestack of tailpipe) is simply good business sense;
I have always questioned the UNs motivation when it comes the issue of Climate Change.
If this was truly about the Environment why try and push for a wealth distribution scheme like Kyoto?
A system that simply required polluters to continue polluting by simply buying carbon credits from developing nations.
If the motivation was truly Environmental Business and Government globally needs to be at that table.
The moment you try and tack on a program that require UK corporations to purchase carbon credits from Chad, you tend to give the appearance that there is a lack of urgency as you can continue to go about your business you just need to slide some money to the government of a third world nation in the process.
The idea started with a 'carbon tax', a notion that was floated in the U.N., whose 'regular assembly' has linked up with various NGOs promoting 'causes', and become a hothouse of leftist politics. They want some source of revenue to expand their 'services'.
That part of the UN thinks of itself as a super-state, a regulator of governments. It needs only a flow of income, a tax of some staple of world trade, like OIL. Or, as they put it, a 'carbon tax'.
The linkup with environmentalism came later.
The trouble was, the Liberal government was linked at the hip with the UN, particularly in Lloyd Axworthy's time. Our military was essentially at the service of the UN, for example. Our national identity became entangled with the idea that we were the peace-keepers of the world. Fantasy. Magic thinking.
Most of this stuff is an exercise in marketing, but it's on such a huge scale few see the scale of the whole operation. Al Gore has become a $billionaire through disaster marketing.
