Quote: Events at the spring convention, including an evening dinner with then-leader Jack Layton, were sponsored and advertised by various unions.
The Conservative Party of Canada lodged a formal complaint with Elections Canada last August, underlining that union and corporate donations are banned in Canada.
Elections Canada wrote back to the Conservatives last week, saying they agreed that sponsorships constitute political contributions.
They said the NDP had taken steps to comply with a section of the Canada Elections Act that requires them to pay back the donors or Elections Canada.
NDP officials said they were in compliance with the Act had no further comment on the matter.

Can you imagine the mass of articles that would be generated had the Conservatives said they had no further comment on any issue let alone a violation of the Elections Act?
